My wife is from the Buffalo area and I really enjoy going up to visit her family since we then have the opportunity to further explore The Queen City of the Lake. I thoroughly enjoy Buffalo including her history, particularly her railroad and industrial history. Thanks for a great web page. |

I am researching Elmer Carl Stieg who was born in North Tonawanda in 1885. His parents emigrated from Germany and he had a brother named Burt. My grandfather was a Lutheran minister. He traveled to Michigan after seminary but returned to Tonawanda for a short time in the early 1920's. If anyone has any info on any Stieg family, past and present, in Tonawanda, I'd really like to hear from you. Thank you! |

What a great site! It is a shame that we can not use the grain elevators to help bring back the waterfront. Light them up, or something. Buffalo has a great waterfront waiting to be found again. Like Cleveland, we should mix entertainment with our industrial past. I hope that we can save these elevators and show future generations what Buffalo was like! |

Excellent site! I especially enjoyed the recording of the LV's diesels, being an LV fan, hence my E-mail address. Also liked the 611 recording as I rode one of those trips. The grain elevators are fascinating also as I worked a RR job there for a time. I'll be looking forward to more RR sounds in the future. The worst part of your site is the sad condition of the NYC Terminal as depicted in that set of photos. |

Great site. Only memories of my dad were chasing trains from milford ma to worcester back in the 50's. He was an avid railfan and for a time an engineer for the new york, new haven & hartford rr. The road he chased was the grafton & upton rr. He died when i was very young. I chased steam in europe in the late 60's early 70's while stationed in the army.Steam was everywhere. I have just recently started to chase and film diesel. Spend some time at selkirk n.y yard and espically love the river line (formerly conrail)through bear mountain. Have bookmarked your site. Keep up the good work. |

While searching the internet for material on the assassination of Abraham Lincoln I came across the cite dealing with Lincoln's two visits to Buffalo as President-Elect in 1861 and at the time of his death when his funeral train passed through Buffalo. It was an interesting read that was very tastefully done. Keep up the good work! |

Wow!! Nice site!! Very interesting!! And if anyone has any suggestions for me to follow, I'd be most appreciative. My grandparents, Jean Ferguson and Donald Scott Carroll, met in Buffalo sometime around 1914---as May of that year was when they were married.(they eloped to Niagara Falls, we think) They were both tennis players(I understand he won a western NY State Championship at some point). Her father, James Ellsworth Ferguson had a company called Ferguson Iron and Steel(or Steel and Iron?!?!); his father, Elic Scott Carroll, was a dentist. Donald's sister, Katherine attended and possibly graduated from Lafayette High School so he may have also;Katharine we think was born around 1884(she was 4-5 years older than my grandfather, Don) which would have put her in high school toward the end of the last century. any suggestions as to where to go for documentation would be greatly appreciated!! Hope to hear from someone!! Sinerely, Linda Young |

Buffalo area native currently in the Air Force, looking forward to moving back to the area in less than 2 years. Keep up the great work! The work that has been done on this site is testimony to not only Buffalo's rich past but to those who wish to spotlight the city old and new alike. With a keen eye to the future (Adelphia's proposed center, for example) Buffalo may finally be poised to take a leap forward and return to the glorious times that made Buffalo the Queen City of the Great Lakes! |

Very interesting site. I've lived in Buffalo all my life and knew little about the history of our Light. I printed all the info & added it to my Lighthouse album. |

Enjoyed listening to the trains. I remember walking a track one day with my sister, watching carefully, as my Uncle Floyd Sager had been blinded by cinders when he was 8 years old. I was born at the Millard Fillmore Hospital in 1935. Home was 174 Lyndale Ave. near the Kenilworth Firehall. I went to Abraham Lincoln School and Kenmore Jr. High, also Kenmore Sr. High. My older siblings called the area "Ducktown". Taking the streetcar downtown with my mother, Carmen, was exciting for me. We went to Kobackers and Sattlers. I remember getting a permanent in an upper floor of a building; across the alley from the window I saw a building with a hole in the side, it blew out smoke. The hole was encircled by a painting of a big face and a mouth where the smoke came from. I liked the Albright Art Gallery. Am researching: HIMMELSBACH, WINTER, SPOTH, BEITER/BADER. Jacob HIMMELSBACH was my ggpa, Joseph was gpa, Henry was pa. Bros: George, Raymond, Gerald, Clyde. Sis': Bessie, Dolores, Geraldine, Audrey. Anyone researching descendants are welcome to inquire. I miss Buffalo as my home; its a friendly place to meet people. |

MY FATHER BERT COOK WAS BORN IN THE FIRST WARD IN 1895. THE WARD WAS IRISH AND THE MEN WORKED ON THE DOCKS OR THE BOATS. MY DAD WORKED AT THE CONNECTING TERMINAL ELEVATOR DURING THE DEPRESSION THE ELEVATOR WAS KEPT OPEN AS LONG AS THERE WAS GRAIN IN IT. HE UNLOADED THE GRAIN FROM THE BOATS,STORED IT IN THE ELAVATOR AND THEN WHEN IT WAS NEEDED HE SHOVELED IT IN TO THE RAILROAD CARS. |

Really a special sight. I went to high school in Buffalo and have always been facscinated with its history. I am now a practicing architect and am most interested in the historic architecture in buffalo. I loved the photographs of the old train station, my favorite Buffalo landmark, and would love to see more of them. |

As a lighthouse collector and lighthouse lover, I really appreciated the history of the light that started my interest in lighthouses. My family also went to Dunkirk (actually Van Buren Bay) many summers when I was a child and the Dunkirk lighthouse is another one of my favorites. Many of my "southern" friends and family will enjoy exploring this web site to learn about my original "neck of the woods". Thanks |

Thank you so much for the Buffalo History Works website. It has provided me with many hours of browsing. I was born in Buffalo and grew up there (1960 to 1984) when I decided to move to northern California. I try to visit once a year, and I find myself missing the area more and more. Your website is informative and interesting, but it is also sad to see so much of Buffalo's historical heritage neglected or destroyed. It also makes you realize how much the area has to offer if it could be realized. Thanks again. Donald Dudley |

Great site!!! Glad I found it.I enjoy reading about "the good old times" of the Buffalo area. Grew up on yhe west side where , for 25 years my family had a grocery store untill 1950.Moved to angola,n.y. untill mid sixties, then back to buffalo. Spent some time at several Deco resturants and always remember the trolly cars, and all the great stores "DOWNTOWN". Will pass this site to all my friends and family. |
